Roald Dahl's History
On Setmber 13th, 1916, in Liandaff, Wales Roald Dahl was born. His father and oldest sister died when he was around 3 years old. His mother was mother to her 4 childen and two stepchilden. He was the only child born after his mother's 2nd marriage. He was the only boy in his family. When he was young he liked to listen to stories and tails. When he was older he loved the story Captain Marryart and other adventure tails. Like his father, Roald kept a dairy. To make sure his sisters could never read it, Roald would put it into a tin waterproof box and tie it to a tree branch. Every day, he would climb the the tree and write in his dairy.
School was not a happy place for Roald. He went to Llandaff Cathedral School from age seven to nine. After that school, he went to St.Peter's boading school. There he was homesick and wrote a letter home each week. (When his own childern went to boarding school he wrote to them twice a week to cheer them up.) At the age of 13, he went to Repton.
Roald didn't go to University! He went and joined Public Schools Exploring Society instead. After this experience, he was asked to write about it. After he sent the story in, the editer wrote back telling Roald he was really good. That started his career as a writer!
